Ekurhuleni Finalises Payment Deal With Eskom, Power Supply Cuts Avoided

The two parties acknowledged in a joint statement issued on Friday, March 13, 2026, that Eskom had previously sent a notice under the Promotion of Administrative Justice Act (PAJA) on March 5th, stating that it intended to cut or stop the city’s bulk electricity supply because of unpaid electricity bills.

However, after discussions between the municipality and the power utility, both parties came to an agreement on a repayment plan that will enable the city to pay for its current electricity consumption while also settling its arrears over time.

The agreement will end all ongoing litigation between Eskom and the City of Ekurhuleni regarding bulk electricity supply, according to the statement, and it will be made an order of court.

The municipality recognized Eskom’s legal obligation to protect the long-term viability of the country’s electrical supply network. In response, Eskom is mandated by law to maintain financial viability and provide equitable treatment to all clients.

The City of Ekurhuleni reiterated its pledge to uphold the repayment arrangement and settle any outstanding electricity bills on time.

In accordance with the agreed-upon payment schedule, the city has already paid R1.7 billion of the R3.4 billion it owes Eskom in March. The municipality will continue to fulfill its ongoing electricity obligations while the remaining balance is paid over the course of eighteen months.

The payments are viewed as a major step toward resolving past debt and stabilizing the city’s electricity account while guaranteeing that present payments are made on schedule.

Residents and businesses were reassured by authorities that there is no immediate risk of Eskom cutting off the bulk electricity supply to Ekurhuleni due to the new agreement and intervention.

Additionally, since revenue collection is still essential to sustaining and enhancing service delivery residents were urged to keep paying for municipal services.

Both Eskom and the City of Ekurhuleni stated that they are still dedicated to open communication and will keep the public updated as talks move forward.
